Star Wars in September-Boba Fett Bag

This is one of the smaller projects I've done in Fender's room to make it more Star Warsy (that's a word I promise!).

Boba Fett is one of the more obscure characters in Star Wars and only has a few lines in the last two movies, but his bounty hunting armor is so recognizable - especially his helmet.  I wanted to jazz up Fender's room with his image so I put it on a toy bag!

When you buy a new set of sheets, they often come in a cloth drawstring bag.  Fender always steals them and fills them with whatever he's playing with that day, so I stole it back and put Boba Fett on it.

Here's how I did it:

I printed out an image of Boba Fett and traced it onto the paper side of some double-sided iron-on interfacing.

Iron the fabric onto the other side of the interfacing using a towel or pillow case as a barrier between the paper and the iron.

Then cut out the image and carefully peel off the interfacing paper.

Place the image on the bag with the interfacing side down.  Using your iron on the lowest steam setting and a wet barrier (I usually wet down a pillow case), hold the iron on the image for 15 seconds. I do it in sections until the whole image has been appliqued.

Let it cool and your Boba Fett bag is ready to rock!

Our New Headboard

dC made us a new headboard and nightstands (quite awhile ago now - I think April?) and it's taken me this long to pull our bedroom together enough to photograph his work!  He's a gem!  I think I'll keep him!

 

 I made this wreath from all of our many trips to the beach.  I get there with an empty bag and leave with a full one.  I love drift wood - I have many memories attached to the coast where I grew up.

Star Wars in September - Yoda sign

As Fender is heading into 1st grade, I really wanted to update his bedroom.  Until now it has been a hodgepodge of Cars and jungle animals leftover from his baby days.  We were looking at this blog here and he fell in love with the idea of a Star Wars themed bedroom (and so did I to be honest!) 
We've been working on our own little projects here and there ever since!

Over the next 4 Sundays in September, I am going to share our Star Wars themed projects as we transform his bedroom! 

 

Let's start it off with none other than Yoda.
 

 

I started with a piece of particle board that I had gotten some time ago at Home Depot for another project that never panned out.  After protecting the floor, I brushed a thin layer of white paint over the entire surface of the board. 

 

 

The particle board is like a sponge, but I actually like the way the paint dried thicker in some spots and thinner in others.

 

 

Next I cut out an image of Yoda and covered the back of him with double sided tape so that I could trace his silhouette onto the board.

 

 

 

 

Then of course I painted his image green

 

 

I chose my favorite Yoda quote and stenciled the words onto the board.

I filled in each letter with a grey sharpie.

 

 

Here's the finished project!  I can't wait to show you how it looks in his room...but that will be for another Sunday!  See you then!

It's Sew Sunday: Pot Holder Towel

I fell in love with a fabric - I didn't buy it the first time I laid eyes on it, because that's not my style.  I'd rather think about it, obsess over whether or not I need it, decide I do, and then go on a mad dash to find it again. (It's usually cute and popular enough that finding it a second time can be a real disaster!)

But I knew it was true love - we're talking orange and bicycles!  So I went on that very mad dash to find the fabric again, and after I was about to leave the fabric shop empty handed and sad, I saw it out of the corner of my eye behind the cutting counter!  I marched on over and got it! 

Not a lot, just 1/4 yard to make a Pot Holder Towel:

What you'll need:

1/4 yd. fabulous cotton fabric
1/4 yd. terry cloth (or really an old towel)
matching thread
scissors
ruler
fabric pen
sewing machine or the ability to hand sew (I do not possess this ability)

Begin by cutting both the cotton and the terry cloth down to an 18 x 23 inch rectangle.  With the remaining cotton cut out two triangles that are about 7 1/2 inches at their peak and that match the opposite corners of your original rectangle.  I outlined where the triangles should be placed below.

Before we begin to pin the whole thing together, remove the triangles and press and sew the inside seam of the triangles that will serve as the actual pot holder opening where your hands will slide in.

Then pin the triangles onto the main cotton fabric with wrong sides together.  The rough edges are all the way around on the outside of both fabrics.

Then with right sides together, pin the terry to the cotton fabric (that already has the triangles pinned on).  Simply sew the perimeter of the fabric - leaving a 4 inch opening to turn it all right side out! 

Once it's turned right side out - use your finger or a chopstick (my new favorite sewing tool) to push out the corners.  Press the seams until flat and set being sure to press under the 4 inch opening (as if you sewed it).

Then topstitch around the entire towel.  I think this makes it look so much more finished as well as takes care of that pesky opening without having to hand sew it shut!

There you have it!  I hang mine on the oven door, use it as a towel when needed, but also grab it to pull items out of the oven with in a pinch!

Mini Figure Jar Toppers

If every surface in your house is covered in Legos like mine is - you are going to LOVE this project.  It's a cute way of organizing your kids' Legos and who doesn't need more organization in their life?  I know I do!

This is also a super simple way to make use of those pesky little black display pieces that come with the mini-figures!

Here's what you'll need for the project:

super glue

mason jar lid and ring

mason jar

mini-figure Lego display pieces

spray paints of your choice

Begin by gluing the mason jar lid together so that the ring and the lid will not separate.  Then when that is dry, glue the mini-figure display piece on the top of the lid.

Take it outside to your favorite spray painting spot and spray away!  I chose the dominant colors to match Fender's most popular Legos - yellow, white, red, blue, and green.  Then top with your favorite mini-figure!  Mine is definitely Evil Knievel.

And of course what it looks like at the end of the day!

Kitchen Marquee Sign

I love that the accent color in my kitchen is orange.  Orange is my favorite color, so anytime I make something orange, or buy something orange, my first intention is to find a quirky spot in my kitchen for it. 

While out at vintage markets and perusing Pinterest, I found marquee signs that kept grabbing my attention.  I've kept my eyes peeled for a large "C" for our family's last name, saw tutorials on how to make my own - then thought about how to add one to our kitchen.  The first thing that came to mind was "EAT" when I think of being in my kitchen - and thus this little project was born.

I bought the string lights and cardboard letters at Hobby Lobby.  The lights are battery powered and even have the option to twinkle which really gives it the effect of a true marquee sign!  Both the lights and the letters are much smaller than those used in the tutorial, but they turned out great after I spray painted them orange!

Star Spangled Fourth

I fell in love with this star on Pinterest a while back - oh Pinterest - how you temp me with crafty ideas!  I finally sat down and decided to make it.  I had always intended to do it for Christmas, but then figured if I made it for the 4th and painted it red - it could possibly be used for both holidays!

I love how it turned out and it made decorating for the 4th so much fun!  You can find the basic instructions on how to make it here!

I spray painted my completed star red - but it seemed too much, so I decided to make it more distressed by glopping a lot of white acrylic paint on it and wiping and sanding a lot of it off.

 

I really like how it turned out and it goes much better with my funky maroon walls than if it were entirely red!

 

 

 

Here's the other side of the room, where I went with red white and turquoise that I hope I can stick with for the rest of the summer!

 

 

I love these coffee pots that my mother-in-law gave me!  They are absolutely my favorite part of the mantel (besides the star of course!)

 

Then outside I couldn't resist to give these a face lift in festive colors as well!  Now off to barbeque!
